It’s not the material price that breaks an emergency order. It’s the missing specification. In my role coordinating rush orders for specialty plastics at Evonik, I’ve dealt with more than 200 urgent deliveries—same-day turnarounds, overnight air freight, and last-minute spec changes. After all that, I’ve landed on an opinion I don’t soften anymore: transparent specs and transparent pricing are the same thing. If you don’t know what you’re buying, you don’t know what you’re paying.
Last quarter alone, we processed 47 rush orders and hit 95% on-time delivery. I’m proud of that. But the ones that didn’t make it weren’t delays because of shipping. They were delays because a subtle spec detail—a tolerance, a grade, a color acceptance limit—had never been written down.

I’ve learned to ask “what’s NOT included” before I ask “what’s the price.” It sounds backwards, but it saves more time than any rush order. When a customer asks for an Evonik acrylic sheet replacement, I ask for the thickness tolerance, UV stabilization requirement, cast vs extruded, color reference, and protective film spec. If the answer is “whatever the supplier pulls from the warehouse,” the quote is not final.
Here’s a concrete example. In March 2024, a customer needed a clear, UV-stabilized acrylic sheet for a trade show display that had to ship by noon the next day. The first quote was low, but it didn’t state the thickness tolerance. I knew I should ask for written confirmation before I agreed to the deadline. But we’d worked with that supplier before, and I thought “what are the odds?” The odds caught up with me. The sheet came in 0.25 mm under the nominal thickness, and the display frame squeezed the edge until it cracked. (Note to self: verify tolerance before promising a date.)

When someone searches for Evonik acrylic sheets, they usually mean “transparent plastic sheet that works.” Actually, a clear sheet is not a material spec. Is it cast or extruded? UV stabilized or UV transmitting? Flame retardant or standard? The differences affect machining, weather resistance, and safety. In a rush, each unanswered question is a potential reorder.
The industry has standards for this. ASTM D4802 covers acrylic sheet types; ISO 7823-1 covers dimensions and tolerances for cast PMMA sheet. A proper spec sheet references those methods. If a quote doesn’t, the supplier is asking you to trust a name instead of a definition.
If color consistency matters, the Pantone color matching system defines brand-critical colors as Delta E < 2. Ask for the measured Delta E on the lot. That’s a better conversation than “it looks close enough.”

Polycarbonate OEM projects are where I see the biggest gap between price and cost. A buyer compares per-part price, but I compare draft angles, gate locations, material melt flow, and the written polycarbonate grade. Small differences in those specs change how the part fills the mold, how it cools, and whether it survives the drop test.
Earlier this year, a polycarbonate OEM quote looked 12% lower than the incumbent. But it didn’t state the material grade or the mold steel hardness. I flagged it before tooling began. The buyer asked the supplier to clarify, and the “savings” disappeared once the spec was updated. (Not that the quote was dishonest—but it was incomplete, and incomplete is dangerous.)

Picking a nylon manufacturer without a material declaration is a gamble. I don’t mean the brand name—I mean the exact grade: PA6 vs PA66, glass-filled vs unreinforced, impact-modified or not. The numbers can look similar on a datasheet and still behave very differently in a molded part.
We didn’t have a formal grade-verification process once. The third time a “same grade” nylon part failed in the field, I finally created a material declaration checklist. I should have done it after the first time. Since then, every nylon supplier has to provide the resin brand, grade, and test methods before we quote a part. It’s not bureaucracy. It’s the cheapest insurance I’ve found.
I also learned to trust the gut when data is incomplete. Every spreadsheet said a generic PA66 grade was equivalent and less expensive by $0.18 per kilogram. Something felt off about the impact modifier. We tested it. The generic grade had half the notched Izod impact of the specified grade. In a snap-fit housing, that’s not a detail. It’s a recall.
What a resin specification guide should do
When I ask for a resin specification guide, I don’t mean a sales brochure. I mean a document that states, at minimum:
- Resin family, manufacturer, and full grade name
- Melt flow or viscosity (with test standard)
- Tensile strength, flexural modulus, and notched Izod impact (with ASTM or ISO methods)
- Heat deflection temperature and UL 94 flame class
- Dimensional tolerances and color acceptance criteria
That list is not a wish list. It’s the difference between “we quote this material” and “we commit to this material.” When a spec is written, the price becomes meaningful. When it’s not, every emergency is just a mystery with a deadline.
But isn’t an emergency about speed, not paperwork?
I hear this from buyers, and honestly, I used to think the same thing. In an emergency, you want someone to say “yes” fast. But I’ve tested enough rush delivery options to know that the supplier who says “yes” without reading the spec is the supplier who calls you back after the deadline with a substitution you never asked for.
Speed without specifications is just moving the risk closer to the deadline. The fastest order is the one where both sides know exactly what “done” looks like. That’s why I ask for the resin specification guide before the quote, not after the first delay.
The bottom line
Transparent pricing and transparent specifications are one and the same. A price is not transparent if it hides grade assumptions, tolerance limits, or test methods. The vendor who lists what’s included and what’s not—even if the total looks higher—usually costs less in the end. I’d rather show a buyer a higher number up front and deliver exactly that material on time than watch them pay for the difference later.
